Industrial O-ring

What is the difference between an O-ring and an X-ring?

An O-ring has a circular cross-section. An X-ring, also called a quad seal, has a four-lip cross-section. The profiles differ in their contact geometry and behaviour during movement. Tutor Seal offers both as part of its industrial sealing range.

The existing groove design and operating conditions determine whether a particular profile is suitable. An X-ring should not be treated as an automatic replacement for every O-ring application.

Which materials can be discussed?

The Tutor Seal range includes NBR, FKM, EPDM and silicone compounds. Material selection depends on the fluid or gas, temperature, movement and service conditions. A material name by itself is not a complete specification: compound grade, hardness and dimensional requirements also matter.

Include the exact medium and any cleaning chemicals in your enquiry. If an approval or certification is required, name it explicitly and ask for written confirmation for the proposed product.

How should an O-ring be specified?

Provide the inside diameter and cross-section, the quantity, and any existing part number or drawing. If measurements come from a used ring, say so: wear, stretching or swelling can make it unreliable as the only dimensional reference. Groove dimensions are useful where available.

For X-rings, specify the profile as well as the dimensions. Tell us whether the application is static or moving, and provide the operating pressure and temperature range.

How do I request an international quotation?

Email the dimensions, material requirements, application, quantity and destination country to Tutor Seal. Include your requested delivery date and any documentation requirements. Ask for price, availability, lead time and delivery arrangements to be confirmed in the quotation.
